February 15th 2008. Great successes across the city in our fight against drugs; major investigations running; detection rates rising. At the same time a major case stops at court today. Much of our business features in the paper, loads more is never heard about.
Our detective officers have to have in depth knowledge across many skill areas. They need to understand untold "ologies" to investigate their crimes, then manage the complexities of solicitors, legal procedures, interpreters, doctors, identification processes and others while dealing with their prisoners. Having achieved this, they need to hold their cases together up to the court proceedings and manage the care of witnesses afterwards. They are managers of complex resources as well as individual investigators. Theirs is one of those jobs where by its nature, it intrudes into their family lives and their cases are always on their minds.
We ask a lot from our detectives. It is great to stand together when they solve difficult crimes. It is also a privilege to work as a team when we all learn from adversity.
